The Veils Between Us
The Veils Between Us looks at the perceptions we hold about reality, how they shift, and how they can both separate and connect us. Made in 2026 for a group exhibition with five other artists, these seven works in charcoal, pastel, wax crayon and oil ask questions meant to push past the veils between us, so that we might draw closer to one another despite our limited understanding of what is real.

Horizons
Oil and acrylic on canvas | Selected landscapes spanning more than a decade
Horizons brings together landscapes created across more than ten years of Genavieve Gilbert’s studio practice. Rather than originating as a single planned series, the works reveal a recurring fascination with distance, atmosphere, light, and the horizon as a place of both separation and possibility. Presented together as a solo exhibition in 2026, the collection traces the persistence and evolution of landscape throughout her practice.

Free as a Bird

Single stroke ribbons of color overlap in tangled forms, floating above an atmospheric background. This series explored the visual representation of prayers ascending to the heavens. In a season of wrestling with deep personal spiritual growth, untangling the dissonance of an evolving theology on prayer and corporate worship, Genavieve sought to resolve some of these tensions through the simplest marks possible. To her each piece represents a different personal battle in prayer and the paradox of prayer being simple and yet complex, carrying weighty depth and yet remaining light as a whisper. This series carries personal symbolism and expression that she found to be very satisfying to her soul in a season of frustrating complexity.

Prayers can be messy, just like life. There’s beauty in the mess if we are patient enough to see; brave enough to embrace it. Coming from a place of deep vulnerability, the soft palette combined with the earthy textures of charcoal and pastels on a raw canvas express a subtle and thoughtful reality often found in the place of prayer—we are but dust. These visual prayers carry the fragility of longing and the persistence of hope despite difficulty. The simple background laid down as a stain on the raw canvas rather than sitting above it, offers a nod toward Genavieve’s attempt to merge her spiritual encounters in prayer with the material itself.
Heart and Flesh

Created during a season of prolonged uncertainty in her family, Heart and Flesh explores vulnerability, dependence, and the tension between physical frailty and enduring faith. The series draws from Psalm 73:26 and explores the vulnerable and universal tension of experiencing the ache of human fragility. The use of blurred line and layered mark making offers a visual tension to the clear movement within the work.

Forever Found
Unfailing Love

This series was inspired by 1 Cor 13:8a “Love never fails.” In a world where it feels like love often fails us, falls short, and even sometimes wounds us deeply—what could this verse mean? As I explored abstract florals and the “unfailing” nature of God’s love the overlap was clear. His love is unfailing like the sun that rises every morning, and the wildflowers that persist, no matter the circumstances. It’s wild. It’s free. It’s full of life.
The Veil Removed
Glory to Glory

Inspired by meditations on 2 Corinthians 3:18, this series explores the visual representation of God’s glory being revealed through abstract landscapes. The receding horizons, and unusual yet restrained color choices speak to the familiar things of this world we know and recognize versus the unseen glory within it; the remnants of the Creator Himself. The light is a focus in every piece to point the viewer to look beyond what they initially see. The many layers of oils used to create these works have an ethereal quality that draws the eye deeper into the atmospheric space.
